Workshop details:

Hello, HTMM students!

Get ready for a special presentation crafted just for you. As the heartbeat of today and the architects of tomorrow, you're about to dive into a fun and interactive experience. You’ll chat with your neighbors in made-up languages, solve seemingly unsolvable puzzles, and hear about my journey from Italy to UCSD. Together, we’ll brainstorm how a career in education can transform lives, how to overcome obstacles, and why it's perfectly OK to navigate through twists and turns. I hope this experience sparks your curiosity and gives you the tools you need to begin your journey toward a future full of possibilities. Even if you’re unsure of the path yet, it’s full of potential—and you’re already on it.

Meet Chiara Carnelos

Italian Lecturer & Academic Coordinator, UCSD

My name is Chiara, pronounced Kiy-AA R-ah. Let's break it down into syllables: Chi – Pronounced as "key."... Oops, sorry, that was my inner teacher kicking in for a moment.

I grew up near Venice in Italy and now live in San Diego with my husband, two kids, and a hamster named Lloyd (nope, I didn't name him.) I graduated from the University of Padua in Italy, specializing in Italian and Comparative literature. I also studied in Dublin and Paris, both incredible cities I highly recommend. I've taught at the Italian Cultural Center in San Diego and am currently a teacher at the University of California, San Diego. I'm proud to have received the Award in Teaching Excellence from the Linguistics Language Program at UCSD twice.

I've written three Italian readers for students of Italian as a Second Language. The first tells the story of two young people from different continents who meet and form a relationship set against Venetian landmarks. The second reader delves into the story of a group of young artists who establish their own company within Ca' Dario, the most haunted house in Venice. The third reader follows the adventure of two brothers as they journey across Italy. And if you need to find out where Venice is (not Venice, Los Angeles, go east, more est...), it might be a good time to look it up; just saying.

I'm also a five-time winner of the international poetry contest Premio Internazionale Giovani E Poesia--Triuggio in Italy. I have succeeded in other well-known poetry competitions, such as Voci del Vajont. Yes, I adore poetry and am not shy about admitting it.

My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there.
