Meet Dan Cruz
Association Director of Public Relations, YMCA
Dan Cruz has over 15 years of experience in media relations and strategic communications. Dan joined the YMCA of San Diego County in 2021 as the Association's Director of External Communications where he leads the organization’s Public Relations outreach and Social Media content strategy.
Before joining the YMCA, Dan served as the Vice President of Public Relations at Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI), a media and event company dedicated to the endurance sports of running, cycling and triathlon. A CGI, Dan implemented a new communications approach to combat a disruptive media environment and support the worldwide growth of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series from 5 events in 2008 to 32 events in 2017.
Dan's career journey began with an internship at Marston+Marston, a San Diego-based public affairs, media and government relations agency. As an account executive, Dan was responsible for providing public, media community and government relations services in support of agency clients including the San Diego Chargers, Otay Water District and South County Economic Development Council.
Dan received his B.A in Communications, with a minor in Political Science from San Diego State University (Go Aztecs!). He currently resides in San Diego where he enjoys spending quality time with his two sons, who love playing basketball, swimming and attending Summer Camp at the Y.
